Special Course Offering: BMIN 5880 Christian Formation of Children

Course Description:

This course provides a theological foundation for ministry and mission to and with children. The class will present best practices to church leaders about how to nurture a Christian community that passes on the faith to children, cultivates spirituality within children, and empowers parents to disciple their children. The course also highlights God’s advocacy for all children and how fostering spirituality in children in hard places in our churches and around the globe promotes resilience.

Holly Allen (Ph.D., Talbot School of Theology) recently retired as professor of Christian ministries and family studies at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. A leading thinker on the Christian formation of children, she is the author of multiple books and articles, the latest of which is Forming Resilient Children: The Role of Spiritual Formation for Healthy Development (InterVarsity Academic, 2021). She has also chaired the InterGenerate and Children’s Spirituality Summit conferences.

Harold Shank (Ph.D., Marquette University) has been the national spokesperson for Christian Child and Family Services Association since 1996. He is the author of Listen and Make Room: Joining God in Welcoming Children (Abilene: Abilene Christian University Press, 2020), along with numerous other publications. A former university president, professor, and preaching minister, Harold currently serves as executive director of Global Christian Studies, an organization that helps fund theological education for global Christian leaders.

Kimberly Scott (MSSW, University of Texas) will be a guest lecturer for this course. Since 2013 she has served as the Executive Director of Agape of North Caroline, a Christ-Centered licensed child-placing agency that provides provides foster care, adoptions, and counseling services to families in need.
