Each scholarship listed below was established to honor or memorialize loved ones by recognizing achievement, preserving memory, and inspiring others to lead lives of service. An HST scholarship committee selects the endowment fund that best matches donor and student ministry goals.

Established in 1994 by Dr. and Mrs. Jack Lewis and Dr. and Mrs. Jack Alston in honor of Mrs. Lewis’ parents and Dr. Alston’s grandparents. Earnings from this fund will provide tuition assistance for students preparing for foreign or domestic mission work.
Established with a gift from Miss Anderson to prepare ministers to preach, counsel, and teach the Gospel. Over 43 years, “Miss Avo” effectively taught thousands of students, many of whom became Gospel preachers, including Dr. Bill Flatt, previous dean at HST.
Established in 2003 by the H.W. Durham Foundation to honor Mr. and Mrs. Argo for many years of service to the foundation. Proceeds from this fund provide resources for the HST library.
Quinton Baker was a student at HST who died in 2012 before completing his degree. The Clarksville, Arkansas, Church of Christ and HST Student Association raised funds to establish a scholarship in his memory.
Established by Mr. Baldy’s wife and children to prepare students for work in foreign missions.
Established by Sherman Rogers and Julie Rogers in honor of Julie’s parents. The fund provides scholarships for those training to preach in small churches.
Established by friends and family of C.W. and Roberta to commemorate their lives of service and C.W.’s 60 years of preaching.
Established in 2021 by Dr. Steve and Lindsay Cloer in memory of Joe D. Bullock, an elder, teacher, and mentor at the Southside Church of Christ in Fort Worth, Texas. Preference is given to applicants with the greatest financial need who are pursuing the Doctor of Ministry degree. The scholarship will match dollar for dollar support provided by a sponsoring church or organization.
Established in 1997 by Mrs. Campbell and children in memory and honor of Mr. Campbell’s love and support for those preaching the Gospel.
Cleaton Crosby was a U.S. postman with a deep and abiding love for the Lord’s church. He was a faithful itinerant preacher for almost 30 years, preaching mostly for small congregations. In appreciation for his grandfather’s lifelong ministry to small churches, Sherman Rogers and his wife endowed this scholarship, which provides a full scholarship to a student intent on serving small churches.
Established in 1997 by members of West End Church of Christ, Nashville, in memory of Michelle de Aguilar, whose encouragement of preaching the Gospel in Latin America inspired many people. Earnings provide scholarships for Latin American and other students preparing for missions.
Established in 2001 by Wasim and Laura Khokhar in honor of Dr. Hadayat and Shakuntla Din. The scholarship provides assistance to Pakistani students preparing for mission work in Pakistan or other countries. Dr. Din is a 1979 graduate of Harding School of Theology.
Established in 2015 by Dr. Michael Robinson in memory of Mr. Emmon’s work as a Christian, elder, businessman, and influence for good. Mr. Emmons was instrumental in establishing Memphis Christian Academy. His leadership enabled Harding College to acquire the property which eventually became Harding School of Theology.
W. Don and Bonnie Cropper Fike established this scholarship in appreciation of their parents, Walter H. and Belle Fike, and Silas C. and Opha Cropper, whose hospitality, encouragement, and support of those preaching the Gospel of Christ have blessed many lives.
Established in 1994 with a gift by two long-time friends of Dr. Flatt to honor him for 29 years of service to Harding School of Theology.
Established with an initial gift from friends and family of Bill and Louise Flatt for his years of service to Harding School of Theology.
Established by a gift from their daughter, Donna Fox Stroup; her husband, George; and their grandchildren to enable students to educate for Christian ministry. Preference is given to African-American students studying to be preachers, Christian educators, or counselors.
Established in 1998 by Mrs. Ann Hagler and children in memory of Mr. Hagler’s love and appreciation for ministers of the Gospel.
Established when Dean Hazelip left HST to become president of Lipscomb University. Friends of Dr. Hazelip established the fund to honor his education ministry at HST.
Established in 1996 by his father, Dr. John Mark Hicks, and his grandmother, Mrs. Edith Lois Hicks, to honor the late Joshua Mark Hicks.
Established to honor Christian evangelism in Japan. Elizabeth was a relative of John Moody McCaleb, an early 20th-century missionary to Japan, whose original home is a historical site in Tokyo. In honor of McCaleb’s dedication to Japan, and close ties the late Ted and Elizabeth developed with HST students from Japan, preference is given to Japanese applicants desiring to study preaching, Christian education, or counseling.
Established in 2011 to mark the 60th wedding anniversary of Carlo and Tine Tabalujan by honoring missionaries Gordon and Jane Hogan and Steve and Jean Cate. Proceeds of the endowment promote mission work in Asia.

Established in 2015 to honor Dr. Evertt Huffard for his 15-year tenure as Vice President and Dean of HST, and to honor Dr. Ileene Huffard for her supportive services during the same period.
Established with a gift by Midtown Church of Christ, Memphis, to support full-time African-American students preparing for lifetime ministry.
Established in 2001 by the Highland Street congregation, Memphis, in honor of Brother and Sister Ijams. They were dedicated to Christian education and the concept of “teaching churches.” In his 92 years, Dr. Ijams served in many capacities in schools and churches. This scholarship provides funds for training men and women to serve the Lord’s church.
Established in 2018 by the estate of Katherine Olivia Ijams in honor of her parents to provide scholarships.
Established in 2012 by Dean Johnson and Ileene Huffard in memory of their parents to provide scholarships. Preference is given to applicants planning to serve as missionaries or church planters.
Established by the friends and family of Gene Jonas in memory of “our elder, bible teacher, father, and Papa”. Gene was a devoted student of God’s word and faithful leader in the Lord’s church.
Established by Mrs. Julia McDaniel Karnes in memory of her husband. At the time of his death in 1980, Dr. Karnes was chairman of the Board of Trustees’ Committee for Harding School of Theology.
Established by Mr. and Mrs. David Ladd in honor of his father, George E. Ladd III, to provide scholarship support to students preparing for pulpit ministry.
Preference is given to scholarship applicants who are preparing for bi-vocational ministry. The donors’ desire is to ease the financial burden for students seeking to minister simultaneously with a secular occupation.
Established by Dr. Jack P. Lewis in October 2009 to provide scholarships for deserving students to attend HST. Proceeds from sale of Mrs. Lewis’ book, Still Living By Faith, provided initial funding. Preference is given to students who desire to minister in domestic or foreign missions.
Established in 1993 in memory of Mary Griffie Cook Lewis to provide tuition for students concentrating in Bible.
Established in 1981 by Dr. Jack P. Lewis, this fund provides supplemental funds to the library for book purchases.
Established by family and friends in 1998. Earnings assist qualified students in preparation for ministry.
Established by family and friends through memorial gifts. This scholarship provides assistance for students in preparation for ministry.
Established by Olga and Eugene Sain in 1997 in memory of Earl and Oria B. McClain, and in honor of Drs. Jack Lewis and Earl West. Earnings are used to assist qualified students in preparation to become pulpit ministers. HST endowment records eventually included Ogla McLain Sain’s name to the title of the endowment.
Established by friends and family of the Moffetts to honor their 58-plus years of ministry. The fund provides scholarships to deserving students preparing for ministry.
Established with a gift by Dr. Morris’ grandson. Earnings are used to assist deserving students preparing for ministry.
This scholarship was established in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Boyce N. Nance and Mrs. Josephine Broyles for students who plan to do mission work after graduation.
Established in 2021 to honor Dr. Oster’s ongoing five-decade academic career, this scholarship gives preference to students concentrating their coursework in the letters of Paul, intermediate Greek, or Greek seminars.
Established in 2015 by friends to honor Bobby Pearson, an elder at the Crestview Church of Christ, Waco, Texas. Scholarships are awarded to deserving full-time students of HST.
Established by a gift from Robert M. Porter, Sr. in honor of his children, Virginia Porter Graves, Robert M. Porter Jr., and L. Embree Porter, to help prepare effective ministers of the Gospel.
In appreciation for his father, Oliver E. Rogers, Sherman Rogers and his wife endowed this scholarship. Oliver Rogers ministered to only two congregations during full-time ministry of 50 years. Each congregation experienced tremendous growth, both numerically and spiritually. After his retirement, Rogers served as an elder. This endowment provides a full scholarship for an outstanding student.
Begun in 1992 by Leon Sanderson as a living memorial to his father, L.O. Sanderson; mother, Rena Raye Woodring Sanderson; and sister, Lloydene Sanderson Wall — all supporters of the Harding University and HST. The scholarship supports worthy students preparing for ministry.
The Scotts were lifelong supporters of Christian education. In late years, Mrs. Scott became interested in training missionaries and ministers. Their gifts, advice, and encouragement touched many lives.
Begun in 1995 in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. Both were involved in Christian ministry throughout their marriage. Dr. Scott also taught counseling at HST for many years.
Established in 1997 in memory of M.A. and Margaret Shelton by their sons and families. Earnings will be used to provide scholarships for students preparing to serve as missionaries.
Established by family, friends and members of the Bartlett Woods Church of Christ, Memphis, in 2008 in honor of John and Dorothy for their 58 years of ministry. Proceeds from the fund provide scholarships for pulpit ministry study.
In memory of John Carl and Sarah Kate for their interest in and support of global evangelizing, this fund assists students who are preparing at Harding School of Theology to teach/preach the gospel in neglected and needy areas of the world. The fund was created by their son, Dr. Philip Slate, who taught Missions at HST for twenty-one years. Continuing gifts to the fund will be an honor to him as well.
Established in 2011 by Terry and Faith Smalling in memory of his parents and two deceased children for scholarships. Preference is given to pursuit of second career ministries.
Established in 2010 by Keith and Craig Smith in honor of their parents to support students in ministry.
Established in 2011 by Robert Smith in memory of his wife of 50 years. Preference is given to students with the desire to serve in ministry.
Established by East Wood Church of Christ in Paris, Tennessee, to honor the work of Don Stevens.
Established in 1989 by Eddie and Pam (Thomason) Mosby in honor of the Thomasons’ lives of Christian service. This fund provides tuition assistance for a student who is preparing for preaching or missions.
Established in 2005 by family and friends in honor of Jane’s many years of service to HST. Earnings from this fund provide scholarships for students training for domestic or international missions.
Established by Mrs. Naomi H. Trussel in memory of her husband, who died in 1971. Earnings from this fund are used in assisting ministerial students.
Established by family, friends and churches whose lives were touched by this Christian couple. Earnings are used to assist deserving students preparing to be pulpit ministers.
Miss Johnny Donaghey Wallace of Conway, Arkansas, who died in 1956, left the majority of her estate in a foundation. Net income from the foundation is used for the education of ministers.
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Welch to honor their parents, John L. and Nevlie Welch and Willie and Blanch VanDyke.
Established in memory of Mrs. West, first Greek teacher at HST. She was also wife of the founding dean of HST, Dr. W.B. West, Jr.
Established in 2007 by friends and family to honor the Yeldells for more than 50 years of ministry. Brother Yeldell ministered across the United States from urban centers in the Northeast to rural towns of the South, as well as shanties in South Africa and Jamaica. Funds provide scholarships for qualified students preparing for ministry.
