The W.S. Long Collection

William Slaughter Long, Jr. was born in Union City, Tennessee in 1874. His family had deep roots in the Restoration Movement, beginning with grandparents who were both baptized by Alexander Campbell. Long’s ministry took him to Illinois, Maine, and Virginia until eventually leading him back home to Tennessee, where he served at the Union Avenue Church of Christ (now Midtown) from 1946-1957. He is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

America’s Loyalty To God (date unknown)

Long composed this sermon during a time of significant unrest in America. The date of the composition is not obvious, making it difficult to locate a particular occasion. Though a precise provenance is unknown, the reader can easily see a patriotic theology and a homiletical style typical of postwar America.
